It’s typically not something that people consider when they are accustomed to being overweight, but there is a very real connection between your weight and diabetes. We all recognize that being overweight is not an ideal situation for a variety of reasons. Though you may think that being overweight is more of a cosmetic issue, or a matter of appearance, it goes much further than that. If you aren’t careful and reach the obese stage, and if you maintain that excess weight for a long period of time, it can cause significant health problems. Those who are negatively affected by their obesity in a readily apparent way often don’t see the danger until it’s too late. Therefore, understanding the connection between your weight and diabetes is critical for your long-term health.

The most fundamental connection between excess weight and diabetes is one of direct causation. Being overweight is taxing on your body because not only are you carrying around all of the extra weight but your organs are also working harder. The heart must work harder; the lungs must work harder; and this also messes with a lot of natural processes within the body. One of the most notable of these processes involves your blood sugar. Your hormones and blood sugar levels are often totally out of whack when you are overweight, and this is where diabetes can set in.

A Real and Dangerous Connection

Weight also relates to diabetes in terms of the particular kinds of foods that a person is likely eating to become overweight in the first place. If you are eating foods that are high in salt, then you are likely to develop high blood pressure. If you are eating a lot of foods that are high in sugar, then it will often trigger diabetes. Therefore, the kind of diet that results in obesity often results in diabetes as well. The sad reality is that, in many cases, this could have been prevented easily.

If you are concerned about the connection between your weight and diabetes, look at your family history. Being obese already puts you at a predisposition to diabetes, high blood pressure and cholesterol, and heart disease. If you have a family history of any of these conditions, particularly diabetes, then it means you have a greater chance of developing the same problem. In such a case, be especially mindful about maintaining a healthy weight range and working to eat the right foods. This can save you a lot of health problems later on–and ensure that you are your best in the here and now as well.
